Larsen are back with the usual line up, after the good hybrid of XXL with Xiu
Xiu and Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo solo record
as (r) and his open window on a sonic desolated land; but maybe we can't even
talk about "usual", as these turinese guys often
merge and blend with other great musicians to offer them their matter full of
chiaroscuro and restless colours.HMKE ep simply
confirms that Larsen are to be seen as an ever changing project that can become
a whole variety of musical suggestions and
atmospheres: the first track, "H", is a remix of the great Deathprod,
who freezes their sound in a beautiful yet scary and threatening
soundscape in his own personal way. Origami Galaktika' remix of "E"
is made of metallic sounds, wrapped in background noise and
waves of feedback. Julia Kent' cello (of Antony' Johnsons ) decorates "M",
a soundtrack for a work of italian artist Marzia Migliora,
with its ancestral percussions and shading drones, but it's even more prominent
in "K", creating glimpses of sweetness and relaxation.
And the new SEIES confirms that K was just one of the many ways covered by
Larsen . Even here, further than Julia Kent, that takes
part on these tracks crafting their edges, there are 2 more renowned collaborators:
Jarboe, whose vocals emerge here and there from
the sound magma of the band, as a memory of far faintnesses, and Lustmord that
brands Marzia, the long track that close the album,
turning it into a slow and icy landscape for lost and resteless voices.
We could interpret Seies as an omen of never happening sound cataclysms, quieten
down into wan rhythms and hypnotic drones. And
then soft intros for almost epic guitar and drums driven tracks, raving mirror-multiplied
arabesques, grey monochromes teared by rays
of fidgety light. Sometime Jarboe' whispers seem willing to utter an ancient
feeling of beauty and anguish, capping that unison of styles,
tempi and signs Larsen accomplish with every new release.
