josef van wissem
it is all that is made (Important)
This Dutch composer/improviser uses ancient instruments to make modern music. Playing Renaissance and Baroque lutes (like a guitar with more strings and a more delicate sound), he works in a new idiom that’s formed in the past few years around folk guitar derived from John Fahey’s American Primitive style, modal music, freeform but not dissonant improvisation, and a bit of Minimalism (James Blackshaw, with whom van Wissem duets, is another player plying a similar approach). Using alternate tunings that give a piquant flavor to the simple tunes and patterns on this solo disc, van Wissem exploits the greater intimacy of his instruments to take us to a more contemplative world of music-making.
