No Fun
$14.99
Carlos Giffoni goes beyond the realm of the noise artist to the point of being a true composer. His debut full length on Important has been extremely well received and it was about time he got around to completing his own album after so many collaborations and so much work putting together the genre-defining No Fun Festival.
This 12" is out on Giffoni's No Fun label and is limited to only 300 copies

Malcolm Goldstein

.
Algha Marghen
$29.99

"Alga Marghen proudly presents an LP edition including some of the seminal
electronic/tape collage pieces by Malcolm Goldstein, created in close
connection to the sulphuric New York pre-Fluxus environment of the early
1960s. The 1960s downtown New York City, rich with activities, doors
opening upon a world fertile with possibilities: the delightful unknown.
Malcolm Goldstein first worked at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music
Center, then joined the Judson Dance Theater with dancers, musicians,
poets, and visual artists all interacting in the common ground of
improvisation/exploration. Most of the music on this recording was
created for the Judson Dance Theater, 'Sheep Meadow' (1966), a collage
of two musics, folk & court music, was realized on a very cheap single
tape recorder that offered its own electronic distortion embellishments.
It was created for an anti-war demonstration to be held in that meadow of
Central Park, with a dancer on top of a flat-bed truck and with loudspeakers.
'Images Of Cheng Hsieh' (1967) was for a dance by Carol Marcy at Judson
Church, simultaneously with an instrumental ensemble performing from the
calligraphic graphic score, with the name of Cheng Hsieh. 'It Seemed To Me'
(1963) was composed for a dance by Arlene Rothlein; a collage of traditional
musics chosen by her to be incorporated with electronic sounds.
'Judson #6 Piece' (1963) was for Ruth Emerson, using only electronic sounds.
Finally 'Illuminations From Fantastic Gardens' (1964), the only composition
for a vocal ensemble on this recording, was composed for Elaine Summers' 'An
Evening of Fantastic Gardens,' a multi-media event of dance, music, film and
visual projections, as part of the Judson Dance Theater concerts. It is the
first music notated by Malcolm Goldstein with graphic renditions of the words
of Rimbaud and without traditional music notation. Two performers were trained
singers, while the others were a visual artist and an actor; two women & two men,
all in the spirit of the times, sources coming together, as art & life blended
in an overflowing of exploration. Edition limited to 350 copies, also including
a 12-page large booklet with the reproduction of the complete 'Illuminations
From Fantastic Gardens' graphic score."

Music Fellowship
$23.99

The first monolith appears on Earth. The apes, huddled in a valley, find the mysterious object and approach it with trepidation. With one hesitant touch, evolution is spurred, and the apes begin their ascent(/descent) to humanity with the use of tools. Territorial wars between apes are no longer fought with fists and teeth, but with bones and clubs. As the victorious ape hurls his deathclub into the air, thousands of years of evolution fly by from first tool to spacecraft.
The Monolith series combines two artists on the same one-sided, reverse-cut LP by hard-panning one recording to the right and the other recording to the left. By adjusting the panning controls on his or her turntable, the listener is free to control the degree to which the two recordings melt into one. Each edition in the series is limited to a one-time pressing of 500 picture disc LPs featuring a Monolith inspired painting by Ned Clayton and includes a CD with stereo mixes, extended versions, and bonus tracks.
Monolith: Earth is the oxymoronic pairing of dreamcore drone legends Windy and Carl and new school leaders of free rock Heavy Winged. Heavy Winged contribute one of their darkest, most oppressive tracks yet. The addition of Windy and Carl's purity creates something entirely different. It's no longer the sound of three bros busting out dark drone metal in some shed in snowy Vermont; it's now the sound of some communal artists busting out epic krautjams in the German hinterland. Primitive, vicious early man meets colossal pristine symbol of higher thought - could there be any better pairing for this Monolith?

Kousokuya
Echos From Deep Underground
Archive
$23.99

For those that don’t know Kousokuya are a cult garage pysch rock trio formed in the 70’s in the Tokyo underground music scene by main member, and recently deceased Jutok Kaneko. Despite having existed for 20+ years the bands output has been fairly sparse with a few releases on PSF and one domestic US release on the Forced Exposure label. Originally the archive release was to be comprised of a fantastic live performance on CD from Osaka in 2001 but having discovered the existence of video footage from the same performance, coupled with the efforts of James a bonus DVD was added to the mix. This release represents to date the only video document of Jutok and Kousokuya released in official capacity and realistically represent a chance for fans of obscure psych to see a band and artist that basically played outside of Japan only a handful of times. This pressing of 700 copies comes packaged in a ½ fold heavy black stock cover with metallic silver and gloss varnish silkscreen work by the wonderful Alan Sherry of SIWA records. The CD and DVD come in black envelopes held together by a silkscreen obi strip.

LSD March
Bigjar Solo Sets
Archive
$23.99

as the title would suggest represents footage James filmed of all three members of LSD March (Shinsuke Michishita, Ikuro Takahashi, Masami Kawaguchi) performing solo sets at Philly’s best book store, BigJar, while on a short US tour in the fall of 2006. Shinsuke and Masami’s renderings represent a Japanese working of psychy folk for guitar and vocals. Ikuro offers a contrasted short piece of oscillator assemble that is firmly rooted in the avant-garde, with overtones of conceptualist art, found sound, and experimentalism. The release comes packaged in a ½ fold heavy stock cover with a pressing size of 550 copies design and silkscreen work by Jason Killinger from Birds of Maya

Mimir
Untitled
Brainwashed
$9.99

Brainwashed continues its 7-inch single series with an alluring slab of thick clear vinyl featuring two untitled pieces by Mirmir (Edward Ka-Spel and The Silverman aka Phil Knight of The Legendary Pink Dots, Christoph Heemann, Andreas Martin, and Jim O'Rourke). Side one adopts an improvised psychedelic-folk feel as droning ripples segue into metronomic clicking pulses and Indian hand-drum rhythms overlaid by acoustic strums. More atmospheric by comparison, the other side is a haunted drone of peaceful thrums, swooping electronics, and natural field noises (moans and bird sounds). As befits its single status (though hardly characteristic of the drone genre), be aware that, while each piece conceivably could last a half-hour or more, Mirmir keeps them short. Still, get it while you can, especially when the first fifty pre-orders come with a DVD-R containing footage of the first Mirmir show recorded in Antwerp in February 2005. - Ron Schepper, Textura
