You guessed it: Songs of the Humpback Whale. In 1979 National Geographic Magazine inserted a flexible "sound page" inside the back cover of all of its editions in twenty-five languages, and that is supposedly how many they printed. No human pop star has ever received such magnanimous treatment, so what is it that is so special about the song of the humpback whale?

Well, for one, humans knew nothing of this fabulous sound until the US Navy released its classified recordings at the end of the 1960s, at the very moment the world was most poised to listen to the unknown, the psychedelic, and the trippiest of sounds. Humpback whale song fit the bill perfectly. From high wails to deep growls to rhythmic scratches to tearful moans, it encompasses the full range of emotions in the longest song performed by any animal, a tune that can go on for nearly twenty-four hours at a time. People are often moved to tears when they hear such intensity for the first time. Some cannot believe it could ever come from a place as silent as the sea. This song inspired the global movement to Save the Whales which continues unto this day.

People tend to assume humpback whale song just a "whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaooooh" and leave it at that. But if you sit down and listen to a complete humpback performance you will find that the long moan is only one note in a complex composition, with distinct phrases, repetition, structure, organization, shape and form akin to many kinds of human music. This is no random outburst of cries and whispers, but a song with power, verve, identity, and design.

It is a desire to go beyond memory and into the sounds of reality that has led us to release New Songs of the Humpback Whale, which aims to gather the best recent recordings of scientists and whale listeners the globe over to give all of us a chance to assess what has happened to whale song over the past few decades. One can hear gradual changes in humpback song from year to year, with some phrases lengthening, others shortening, others disappearing altogether as new variations appear. The change can be heard month to month, and even week to week within a single season. Today's whale songs should sound quite different from what he fondly remembers from the sixties. But is their musical culture going downhill? Or is it on the rise? Or just changing? Can we humans even tell the difference?

To tell the difference, infographic designer Michael Deal has created a new way to visualize humpback whale song, based on sonograms familiar to sound scientists, but simplified into colorful glyphs, making the structure of this grand underwater music easier to understand than ever before.

Though humpback whale song did not evolve for humans to appreciate, it may be no accident that we do. To those within Bach's circle, and probably to any attentive musician of his day, the notes thus sounded would have unmistakably articulated Bach's name -- an embedded signature, not just a melodic motif but a salutation in musical code. Morton Feldman begins Clarinet and String Quartet with the same four notes in reverse order -- H, C, A, B, if you will. These four notes are repeated over and over by the clarinet and the cello simultaneously, the two instruments in minutely different rhythms and phrasings. These notes, however, are given anomalous names: in the cello, B, D-double flat, G-double sharp, A-sharp; and in the clarinet, C-flat, C, A, B-flat. Whether or not Feldman placed the retrograde B, A, C, H motif intentionally, it fits seamlessly into the pitch world of his late music, in which chromatic clusters (often four notes) are obsessively restated in different permutations, like anagrams."

TRACK LISTING

1. And while Anoxia means the total absence of oxygen, in Lea's hands it heralds aural environments that are full of the dreams of man that may well be devoid of his living presence. As we all know, the anthropocene era in which we live has many manmade monuments that add up to a total presence we will leave behind: the labyrinthine arrangements of Lea are a soundtrack to such a world, one without man that is nevertheless a world fully marked and constructed by him.

From the very first moments of the pummeling djun djun skins and the growing bowed roto toms of Labyrinthitis, the direction is one of a more radical constructivist sound rooted in modernist architecture. Lea creates an architectonic landscape, one that places the listener in an environment they alone seem to inhabit. Having elevated his practice to the point where he cleaves space sonically, with Frost the perfect man to mix such spaces. The results are visions of a Brutalist world slowly decaying, but with the mellifluous harmonics of vegetation and fluid matter entwining themselves amongst the ruination.

By the time the track Seconds comes around with its shimmering, accumulating aluphone and ascending use of fermata, you feel like perhaps you've awoken in a new dawn, before the bass and cymbals signal a fire drill or an evacuation. The eponymous movie from 1966 by John Frankenheimer comes to mind, in which a man is given a new identity, only to descend into a paranoid world of apparent illusion and subterfuge. If this is a new dawn after the preceding track Metamorphosis, the chance for a second life, it is one in which the body and its functioning can be reborn but in which the spirit remains suspended, reduced to a limbo world. With Drop City we seem to enter a metropolis of steaming fogs that engulf submerged engineering works: a drowned world of rampant chaos slowly, tentatively, overtaking the geometric order of streets and buildings.

Other tracks rise up like towers in a city stemming from the metallic chimes and structured percussion, we have visions of the Balfrun Tower or the Genex Tower, but that is not to root this to geographical real world locations. Anoxia may well be in a time outside of time. A Ballardian imagination is opened up that allows the inverted dreams of the mind to fuse with a recognizable reality: black can become white, ruins become homes. On the title track Anoxia, cello harmonics swing their head and screech like prancing komodo dragons, marking the entry to the final track, the End Zone, where Lea carries out his own initiation ritual, a dance between those edifices left beneath the growing millennial weeds and forests. This is the second major work that Bill and Davida have created since their initial production Lyric and the resulting Lyric/Suite (Accretions) CD was developed and released in 2003. Their longstanding collaboration has cultivated a highly integrated lexicon of sound and movement. Inspired by diminutive, carved Japanese statues called Netsuke, Bill and Davida strive to bring this exquisite manifestation of humans, animals, fantastic creatures and deities to life.
With the basis of a prepared guitar score developed in-residence and augmented by percussion and đàn nguyệt (Vietnamese moon lute), Bill has created a mysterious and emotive sonic world which two dancers embody. Despite the score being composed for live performance, Bill recorded a version with Scott Colburn and further augmented the work with conventional guitar, bass and other electronics, thus creating a work that stands beautifully and strangely on its own, in addition to being a powerful component of the choreographed work.

Tracks on Mutei vary wildly from dark drone to plaintive and playful; from meditative ambience to squalls of visceral noise.

"The movement vocabulary for Dream Pavilion arises from a process in which the dancers embodied the physicality of Japanese netsuke, tiny sculptures of exquisite detail. Cut in the mausoleum of the late Norwegian sculptor and painter Emanuel Vigeland, it's that most unusual of quartet LPs: the players sacrificing their respective individuality in service of a whole that feels telepathic. Reverberating rivulets of harmonium, bells, organ, and other instruments stream together to form a holistic stew that is by turns glassine (Beneath the Bough), broiling (The Green Flood), and regally outre (Afterglow). The ideal hostess for this avant-garde soiree, Maja S.K. Ratkje comports her voice to accentuate Celadon's shifting intensities, her sharp ululations mimicking the massed sine waves or operatically surfing them." ~ Spin

"Where does Celadon start and when does it stop? The simple answer is once the third of the disc's three works ends, but that's not really a good enough answer, for the album feels circular in its slow and developing methods of exploring timbre and acoustic space. Like the green-blue glazed ceramics that its title references, Celadon provides a hard-edged, aesthetically polished surface on which sounds can work out their strange fricative energies.

"Perhaps a clue lies in the nature of the album's recording space - artist Camille Norment and musicians Maja SK Ratkje, Jon Wesseltoft and Per Gisle Galaen recorded it in 2013 in Oslo's famous Emanuel Vigeland mausoleum. Its frescoed interior is known for its reverberant properties - Diamanda Galas took full advantage of them in a memorable concert in 2012 - and Ratkje, who mixed and mastered the album, and Thomas Hukkelberg, who recorded it, have done a fine job in bringing these resonances and reverbs to CD so well.

"The music benefits from the skillsets of its artists: Ratkje, whose extended vocals can both quiet and disquieten; Norment, the American Oslo based artist whose audiospacial installation Rapture is part of the current Venice Biennale; drone master Wesseltoft; and zither/harmonium player Galaen. The quartet employ all-acoustic instruments, the strangest of which has to be Norment's glass armonica, an 18th centure invention by Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States and a man with an insatiable interest in natural philosophy - why else build a machine with a series of spinning crystal bowls around a spindle? Norment has described its sound as something akin to the pure tones of a sinewave, and here the rise and fall of the armonica's sounds (in a greater range than you might think) add new layers to the drones produced by Wesseltoft and Galaen. There's a hint of Terry Riley's early work in all the sonic shimmer. It's left to Norment's armonica and Ratkje's vocalising to send out the probes that really explore this building, and they do so in a genuinely inquiring manner. Bouncing back and forth across the walls of its sanctuary, Celadon is about composition as much as it is sonic architecture, and it's an excercise that puts the listening experience at its heart." ~ Louise Gray, Wire Magazine

"The four-way collaboration Celadon, between Maja S.K. The cohorts utilise these aspects excellently as they craft three blissful pieces of gentle ambience, slow-moving explorations in sound texture that are as relaxing as they are beautiful. The mausoleum of Emanuel Vigeland was chosen for its acoustic properties and is a work of art in its own right - with walls and ceilings that would house the painter's body when he died in 1948, decorated with his erotic paintings as a dedication to life.

"Both fertile and reverential, the sounds the players sent out into this tomb become anointed with particularly long and rich reverb trails that float, linger and layer in the space. Then the amalgamated cues A Walk Up Eldon Street/Hunting Through a Locked Door/Falcon (For Jay Ali)/Burning Fields III juxtapose the submerged epileptic machine judders of small-town existence against the promise of endless skies just out of reach: primitive gong rhythms and rusted piano clanks wrestle with cymbal chords, piano frame choirs and electric violin drones. Dobrudden continually jump cuts between staggering bass, throbbing pain tones, distorted running polyrhythms and shifting internal drones before the jagged tension finally breaks and utter panic sets in.

Descent From the Bridge in the next reel tracks the hunters stalking street by street, enormous bass caverns bloom under the sodium lights as bloodshot eyes try to penetrate the municipal gloom. By The Moorland Broke Loose the remnants of humanity are fighting against each other, wolves howl in the near-distance, torches search, find and chase their prey as Paleolithic rock impotently crashes and rages around them. The bitter ice-rain squalls ...On Calderdale Ridge wash hope down to its rawest form, ending with the initial core of the entire score: the lamenting roar of two wounded souls being torn apart by events way beyond their control. Then Leave This Place paints a sole moment of battered but undaunted tenderness with snatches of beauty half-heard and half-remembered through the Winter gales, before Waiting For the Brake Lights quickly drowns it out with its piston rhythms careering downhill. And then we are left at the feet of Monument I as wind-choirs hail the blank stare of disbelief at cruelty unleashed.

The film ends with the headache tones of High Tension Wires cross-fading into the slow motion scream of the title track from Daniel's next solo album The Infinite and the Unknowable (Excerpt II) - (due late Spring 2015). And yet, even as the last bass gongs mark the seconds passing like hours, a glimmer of the human spirit is left as an obscure corner of England is forever marked by something like mercy.

The album is completed by a further 7 unused themes selected and re-worked from the 5 hours of music written for the film. Monkey Puzzle and Burning Fields I narrate the original beauty and innocence of Laila and Conor's dream, whereas Gorse Wind is forever lost in the moorland blackness. The oscillators and ghosts of Under the Sodium Lights and Doubt lead into the monumental distortion slabs and requiem of Codeine Fuzz before, finally, Heath Land Siren issues its rusted animal warning across the rain-sodden hills.

FILM INFORMATION
Catch Me Daddy is a film by Daniel Wolfe and Matthew Wolfe and is an EMU FILMS production supported by Film4, BFI, Lipsync, Screen Yorkshire and Studio Canal.

AWARDS
Selected for the Cannes Directors' Fortnight 2014 (France) and nominated for the Camera D'Or. Winner of Most Promising Newcomer (actor Sameena Jabeen Ahmed) and nominated for 4 other awards in the British Independent Film Awards. Winner of Best British Newcomer (Sameena) at the BFI London Film Festival 2014 (UK) and nominated for the Graham Sutherland First Feature Award and Best British Newcomer (writers/directors Daniel and Matthew Wolfe).

http://www.descendingangel.com

TRACK LISTING

1. The Complete Sonambient Collection celebrates 100 years of Harry Bertoia in 2015, the centennial of his birth.

In the late 1950s Harry Bertoia (1915-1978), already a renowned American sculptor, began creating long-form, improvised pieces of music utilizing pure acoustic tones evoked from his sound sculptures. Around this time Bertoia came up with the term "Sonambient" to describe the music and environment created by his tonal sculptures and their lush harmonic overtones. In a renovated barn on his property deep in the Pennsylvania woods Harry curated a harmonious selection of his sculptures and gongs, often recording his frequent, intuitive sound experiments using fout overhead microphones and a 1/4" tape recorder. Bertoia dedicated the last twenty years of his life to his Sonambient work and in 1970 he released the first Sonambient LP. In 1978, in the final months of his life, he selected recordings from his archive and produced ten more Sonambient records. He would not live long enough to see or hear these records himself. Bertoia died in 1978, at age 63, and was buried beneath a giant gong behind his Sonabmient barn.

Bertoia's recordings are as much a celebration of sustained tones, slow decay, healing vibrations and shimmering harmonics as Indian Classical music, singing bowls, The Well Tuned Piano or Benjamin Franklin's glass armonica. Through these rich harmonics, pulsing tones and pure gongs Bertoia was able to more clearly articulate his inner spirit than he could with sculpture alone – a point he made himself many times in interview. Harry's single greatest piece of art is the totality of his life which is nearly impossible to measure but easy to feel. There's a sense of rural, open space as the chorus fills up the sky. No doubt the view during the day extends for miles on all sides, spilling down the sides of lush hills and rising upward to touch the clouds. Instead of carving up this recording and dispersing it amongst other instrumentation, Pitre keeps it intact. The landscape exists as a whole, and the instruments sprout upon it like plant life. Throughout his 'unplanned trilogy' Pitre has been adept at creating experience, making something exist that wasn't there before and encompass what wasn't surrounded before. Blackshaw sings in a gentle but assured voice while his words combine his personal experiences, neuroses and fantasy through many layers of abstraction, poeticism and dark humour. What took so long?? The hushed patient sigh of Blackshaw's voice is a perfect accompaniment to his summery yet somber, bright yet bittersweet, lush yet longing compositions, at times recalling the pastoral Renaissance meadowland folk of Amazing Blondel and elsewhere the haunted bedroom whisper of Elliott Smith. But she doesn't really need any of them, to be honest, since she can handle anything from reed to brass to percussion to string instruments to accordions to effect pedals all by herself - and so she has on all of her records up to this point, only rarely including guest appearances. Each release becomes more pointed, zen-like, and tighter instrumentally, and judging by the track 'I'm In You,' her latest record Heat Source is likely to be her most focused album to date: impressive considering she recorded it between New York and London over a full year. Trained at Juilliard with Leonard Rose and Harvey Shapiro, Curtis received the Piatigorsky Prize of the New York Cello Society. For ten years Curtis was Principal Cellist of the Symphony Orchestra of the NDR in Hamburg; a former faculty member at Princeton and Brooklyn College, since 2000 Curtis has been professor of music at the University of California, San Diego.

Judith Hamann is a Melbourne-based musician whose main instrument is violoncello. The technique consists in recording original performances of several works by celebrated composers from the past (for solo instruments), and reinventing the audio files, deconstructing the pieces as a collage, using different and complex kinds of digital audio processes to create a post-modern electro-acoustic version of the classical piece. As a result the usual acoustic instrument timber is expanded into deep and rich atmospheres using the entire range of frequencies. The collages series are also a sonic application of British painter JMW Turner' technique to use layers of colors and textures to turn everyday landscape into powerful and expressive oneiric fantasies. Past versions were possible thanks to commissions by the Westminster and Chelsea Hospital/Museum (UK) in partnership with Royal College of Music (UK), the Arts Council through the Wiltshire Museum (UK), Polish Artists in London "PAiL" (UK), the Hilltown New Music Festival (Ireland) and the FEast 2013.

TRACK LISTING

A
Collage 1 (After M. There she would lie and listen to the sounds around her just as she did years later when she was imprisoned for spying on Nazi compounds in Arhus. Once released from prison she became a piano student at the Royal Danish Conservatory in Copenhagen, but chose to instead pursue the nuances of her inner sound world after hearing Pierre Schaeffer in 1952. The compositions on this album consider notions of sustenance, shifting harmonic spectra, psycho-acoustic derivation of artificial resultant tones, and interior movement within a semblance of stasis. Over the past five years, Davachi's compositional projects have been primarily concerned with disclosing the antiquated instruments and forgotten sonics of a bygone era in analog synthesis; her work on August Harp puts forth offerings from Buchla & Associates, Sequential Circuits, and EMS (London), subsuming transitions that took place between 1968 and 1981. Informed by the lush electronic tapestries of experimentalist-era synthesis pioneers, her music often exudes the sorts of wandering transformations inherent in real-time performance with analog equipment. August Harp exploits the innate instabilities of these instruments, constructing layers of texture that seem to pull each other apart as the discrepancies in frequency of the merged sound gradually swell and wane. Coupled with acoustic instruments such as cello and organ, Davachi seeks to direct the experience of timbral coalescence: mutual acoustic identities are brought together; cocooning the listener into a space that is at once physical, yet invariably out of reach.

As a composer of electronic and electro-acoustic music, Sarah Davachi engages in practices of analog and modular synthesis and psycho-acoustic manipulations. Her compositions focus on the experience of enveloped sonic dwelling, often utilizing extended durations and drones, gradual transformations in texture, fluctuating and spectrally-rich timbres, and simple harmonic structures that emphasize variations in overtone complexity and natural phasing patterns in order to approach distanced and altered landscapes.

Davachi holds an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in Oakland, California and, since 2007, has worked for the National Music Centre in Calgary as an interpreter and archivist of their collection of acoustic and electronic keyboard instruments.
